Li Shaoran is a fourth grade transfer student from Hong Kong. He transfered to Tomoeda Elementary School in December. He leaves before sixth grade. He is the descendant of the mother of Magician Clow Reed, the man who made the clow cards. He came to Japan to look for Clow Cards. He has strong magical powers and is sensitive to the power of others. He often helps Sakura catch the Clow Cards and change the Sakura Cards. He is somewhat unwilling engaged to Li Meilin. The engagement is called off when Meilin learns he loves Sakura.
In Hong Kong he lived with his mother and four sisters. He also spent time with their servant, Wei, who taught both Shaoran and Meilin martial arts. At home he was often very serious and didn't play much. He does have a kind heart though, as shown when he brought back Meilin's lost pet bird.
In Japan Shaoran seems to relax a little more, especially around Sakura. That he likes her becomes obvious and causes Tomoyo to start acting as a matchmaker for him and Sakura. He tells Sakura that he loves her before returning to Hong Kong. He says that he is content to know that she is happy, even if she doesn't love him back. He gives her a bear that he made.
