Sakura is a fourth grader at Tomoeda Elementary school at the beginning of the first season. By the end of the show, she is a sixth grader. She lives with her older brother Touya and her father Fujitaka. Her mother died when she was 3. She usually goes to school on rollerblades along with Yukito and Touya on their bikes. She is very afraid of ghosts of any kind. Her favorite animal is the penguin. She uses both batons and pom poms in cheerleading club.
One day Sakura found a magic book with Clow Cards in it. She lost the cards and awakened the guardian, Kerberos. She became the Card Captor Sakura to capture the clow cards. To do this she uses her sealing rod and her magical powers. She is helped by the seal beast Cereberus and later by the other guardian, Yue. Her sealing rod later turns into the star rod when she switches from using Clow Reed's power of the sun and moon to her own power of the stars.
She has a crush on her brother's friend, Yukito, though he tells her that he loves someone else. She is extremely shy when dealing with matters of love and occasionally gets flustered. Sometimes she gets distracted watching Yuki during cheerleading practice and ends up hitting herself on the head with her baton. She falls in love with Li Shaoran, the transfer student from Hong Kong and former competitor for the Clow Card. Shaoran's rival (as he perceives it) is Eriol, the transfer student from England.
Her best friend is Tomoyo. Sakura loves to hear Tomoyo sing. Another of her friends is Meilin, who she can talk to about matters of the heart. These two don't really get too close, but there's definately a kind of bond between them.
