Clow Reed was a very powerful magician. He created the Clow Cards and his guardians, Yue and Cereberus. He created the cards as a blend of western and eastern magics. He used them both for magic and for fortune telling. He had a rival in Hong Kong that was a fortune teller. His mother's descendents live in Hong Kong, where he lived most of his life. His father was from England. Near the end of his life he lived in the area that is now Tomoeda, where he eventually died. He kept this fact from the memories of Cereberus and Yue. He sealed his cards in a book with Cereberus on the front and Yue on the back. This book could only be opened by someone with a lot of magical power. This person would be Sakura, his successor.
His reincarnation, Eriol, retains all of his magical powers and his memories. He planned his reincarnation in order to help Sakura gain in power so that she could support and control both the guardians and the cards. He also created a bell, passed down through generations until it came to Mizuki Kaho, that would aid Sakura in the Last Judgment.
