Characters
Below is information on the main characters of Gilded Cage. As a warning there are some things that can be considered spoilers. Also there is information here that doesn't really come up in the story itself, mostly the character's back history. You'll notice that some people have two ages listed, for example Kaden's age says 15/18. The story takes place over several years. The first (or only) listed age is the age the character is when they appear in the story. Ie, Kaden is introduced at age 15, whereas we don't meet Olwen until he's 19. The second listed age is that age that the character is near the end of the story, three years later.
Kaden

His parents died from a sickness when he was fourteen leaving him the sole provider for himself and his sister, Sayra. Kaden was taught that taking care of his family should be first priority, following the example of his father, a carpenter. His family was very close. Sayra and Kaden would often help their mother as she worked at a bakery. Kaden is extremely loyal to those he holds dear. He'd do anything to prevent them harm, no matter the cost to himself. He is a hard worker, throwing himself into whatever task is put in front of him.
Sayra
Age: 13/16
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Blue
Height: 5'3"
Sayra is very frail and gentle. Her parents and Kaden sheltered her as best they could from any kind of shock. Like her brother, she hates the though that others might be harmed because of her. She is extremely optimistic, though not very outgoing. She is patient and can be very determined if a challenge is set for her. Though she seems very serious, she is always free with her smiles.
Olwen
Age: 19
Hair: Dark Blonde
Eyes: Green
Height: 5'7"
Olwen is the nephew of the current king. He is friendly with the prince. His mother was the king's youngest sister, but decided to become a doctor and help people rather than be married off to a noble. Olwen's father was also a doctor in the employ of the guards. His parents worked as a team, aiding people whenever wars or natural disasters struck. Both were killed by bandits when Olwen was very young. He decided to become a doctor in their memory and came to enjoy the profession. Olwen stays mostly in the city, only leaving when there is grave need for doctors. On those times the king send a heavily armed escort with him. He's had the finest of tutors since childhood, but never really excelled at physical exercises.
Jariath

Hair: Dirty Blonde

Height: 6'0"
Jariath comes from a very large farming family in a country to the south. His country became engaged in war and he was enlisted in the army. There he learned how to fight and how to defend himself. After the war, a peace was reached, though his country was in financial trouble. Jariath became a mercenary, sending money back to his family. His time as a mercenary took him through several countries. Finally, his company disbanded, leaving him in the current city looking for employment. There he meet Halycon and was hired on as a private guard. After Halycon had learned of Jariath's expertise with weapons, he arranged for him to become a trainer for his group of assassins. Once inside the organization, Jariath, like many others, found that his options were stay there and make money for himself and his family or be hunted down by assassins.
Halycon

Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Blue
Height: 5'11"
Halycon comes from a well-established noble family that traces its lineage back to nearly the founding of the country. His family has considerable wealth and influence within the city. Halycon doesn't usually visit the court, having moved into a private estate on the city bounds after his wife died of illness. His wife was the king's younger sister, second in line for the throne, making him Olwen's uncle-in-law. The current king has one brother, two sisters, and only one son.
Jadon

Jadon's parents are craftsmen, his mother a weaver and father a potter. He has one older and one younger brother. Since he was a child he'd always admired the city guard, especially when they were on parade. It was his dream to join the guard, though his parents accepted it grudgingly. He rose quickly through the ranks, showing competency, caring and a drive to succeed. Eventually he became Captain of the city guard, stationed at the palace. There he constantly works to improve the performance of the guard and rid the city of crime.
Alric
Age: 19
Hair: Red
Eyes: Brown
Height: 5'6"
Alric comes from a family of lesser nobles. He has two older sisters, one older brother, a younger sister, and a younger brother. His family is moderately well to do, but anticipates large weddings and dowries for the three daughters. In order to ease some of the financial pressure on the family he joined the guard. Alric has always excelled at physical exercises. If something proved a challenge for him, he would practice until he'd mastered it. There were opportunities for him to become an officer, possibly even a commander, but he turned them down. Instead he prefers to retain his position of quasi-authority as the trainer of new recruits.
